THE SAN DIEGO BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT COUNCIL
The City of San Diego has 18 Business Improvement Districts (or BIDs) that collectively support approximately 12,000 San Diego small business owners and their communities. Each BID consists of business owners who choose to be assessed a fee for use in promoting and improving their business area. The fees are allocated to a non-profit business association that is assigned to manage the BID and are used for activities that develop marketing campaigns, increase public awareness of the BID, secure additional funding, and finance public improvement and beautification projects in partnership with the City. They essentially work to enhance the growth and vitality of the community. These organized business communities are very effective in creating positive change and support for small businesses in the area. San Diego is proud to have the largest BID program in California and one of the most active in the nation.
In 1989, San Diego's BIDs recognized that by joining together they could form a stronger, unified organization focused on supporting all of San Diego's business districts. As a result, the Business Improvement District Council (BID Council) was formed. Its mission is to improve the physical, social, and economic environments of San Diego's small business communities and to disseminate information, resources, and expertise to its member BIDs. Instead of having individual BIDs all work on similar projects, the BID Council could now more efficiently carry out those programs on a citywide scale. Since then, the BID Council has been providing a unified voice for San Diego small businesses and their communities. Eight years later, the Business Improvement District Foundation (BID Foundation) was formed as a nonprofit public benefit corporation to facilitate corporate and private giving.
